Meet Albert Kruegel

Albert Kruegel is the creative lead and laser artist behind Graffeetie Designs, a custom engraving and functional-art business that creates individually crafted products (custom-engraved kitchenware, tools, cutting boards, home decor, etc.) intended to be used, gifted, or preserved as valuable keepsakes.  Albert has always valued his unique personal artistic touch, and it has been his goal to preserve his creative identity even as his business grows.

How Graffeetie Designs Began

Graffeetie Designs began about six years ago: an idea born out of Albert’s interest in personalized artwork and woodworking. 
As the business grew, he wanted to expand his production capacity, but, importantly, he wanted to do so without losing his unique touch and identity- the “handcrafted, personal aspect” of his work, as he describes it. 
That led Albert to begin exploring laser engraving as a way to expand production while preserving the handcrafted character of his work.

Albert eventually settled on the OMTech AF4063-a 150W CO2 laser cutter and engraver with a 40" x 63" working area, autofocus, and 600mm/s engraving speed from the OMTech Maker Series.   
Then OMTech MOPA Fiber Lasers soon caught his attention, and Albert was drawn to the many more materials, opportunities, and ideas that having a high-capacity MOPA fiber laser as a companion machine could offer up. Albert shared, “I  looked at a couple of other competitors. One thing I liked was OMTech's location here in California.” Of course, he was further convinced by good reviews OMTech gets from customers and, upon doing a lot of research into the equipment itself, found the “power and capabilities of the machines” excellent for his business. But it was the fact that OMTech was there-physically present that reassured him and made him choose OMTech.
“I haven't been disappointed,” Albert shared. “The CO2 laser was the first machine for me”. But eventually,  he was also impressed by the MOPA and realized it was necessary if he wanted to expand and do more for customers.

By combining the CO2 and MOPA laser engravers, Graffeetie Designs has been able to build a versatile production system centered on precision and repeatability, especially for large-scale work. The CO2 provides flexibility for organic materials and larger-format work, while the MOPA provides precision and consistency on metal. 
Albert cited a perfect example of a coordinated corporate project completed with both machines working together where Graffeetie Designs engraved stainless steel grilling utensils with the MOPA 100W Split Fiber Laser Engraving Machine, and then created matching personalized cutting boards with the CO2 laser, with “each machine doing what it does best.” The same approach has also been used for engraved hammers and other tools.  
Together, the machines let Graffeetie complete multi-material projects in-house without outsourcing. As Albert put it: “Graffeetie Designs can create a single, sentimental, personalized gift one minute and reliably manufacture 500 identical commercial pieces the next.”

Graffeetie Designs’ Field AI Project: A Picture of OMTech- Powered Speed and Repeatability 

For an example of the impact of the boost in production capacity provided by OMTech’s laser engravers, consider the Field AI project completed in two days by Graffeetie Designs. 
For Field AI, Graffeetie produced 500 steel utility cards featuring company branding, functional markings, and a QR code linking to robotics content. Steel offered durability and a substantial feel, while the MOPA produced a crisp, reliably scannable QR code. 
Once the process had been tested and refined, the primary challenge became the deadline. Using a repeatable template and engraving six cards at a time, Graffeetie completed all 500 pieces in two days, -well ahead of the customer’s initial requirement of at least 200 pieces within roughly three days.

What's Next for Graffeetie Designs? 

Albert wants controlled growth while preserving Graffeetie's personal approach. Priorities include corporate gifting, customer appreciation programs, and repeatable commercial relationships. Future equipment expansion would most likely mean another MOPA laser to increase throughput.
