ABOUT THE HOST

OMTech Certified

Bio: Welcome to my laser heaven!

My name is Jack Schindhelm, and I’m excited to share my wonderful retirement hobby with you.
Before retiring in 2011, I worked full-time for 40 years: 28 years as an Industrial and Technology & Engineering Teacher (grades 6–12), and 12 years as a Patternmaker in the foundry industry. In my teaching career, I covered woodworking, drafting, printing, computers, metalworking, machine shop, welding, and advanced CNC machining.
After retirement, I wanted to keep my mind active and decided to purchase a laser. In 2014, I bought my first laser from another company and used it for over eight years. Although I appreciated their technical support, the machines had many issues, and they always charged for shipping—something OMTech doesn’t do!
My first machine was a 40-watt CO₂ laser that cost $5,000, and my second was a 45-watt model for $3,400. Eventually, I realized I needed a better-quality laser.
In 2022, I found OMTech and bought the MF1220-50R laser for $2,447.58 with Lightburn. It has the same workspace as my old machine but is six times more robust. The OMTech machine is mostly steel (not plastic like my previous lasers), and replacement parts cost much less. For example, I paid $500 for a 45-watt tube before, but only $169 for a 50-watt tube from OMTech.
In January 2025, I faced a computer connection issue with my OMTech laser. After several troubleshooting sessions with their wonderful support team, they confirmed it was a warranty-covered problem that started in August 2024. OMTech sent me a brand-new laser at no cost and even provided a shipping label to return the old one!
I now have my new laser, which is the same size as my old one but 4” taller and far better engineered.
I decided to volunteer as a Demo Room Host for three reasons:
1️⃣ When I was searching for a new laser, I saw the closest demo room was in Minnesota.
2️⃣ As a retired machinist and teacher, I recognize quality when I see it—and I wanted to share this amazing machine with others.
3️⃣ I’ve learned a lot along the way and want to help others avoid the mistakes I made.
Lastly, I don’t use my laser for profit. 100% of the money I make goes to charity.
